"The Drugs Don't Work"
The Guardian and the BBC are highlighting a major review that has concluded that Prozac and similar anti-depressants may have little clinical benefit for all except the most severely depressed patients.
The study examined all available data on the drugs, comparing the effects on patients taking the drugs with those given a placebo or sugar pill.
The clinical psychologist and writer Dorothy Rowe has, for many years, argued that the drugs don’t always work. In her bestselling book, Depression: The way out of your prison, she explains how depression is a consequence of how we create meaning in the world. It is not an illness or a mental disorder, but a defence against pain and fear.

Resilient Therapy
Working with Children and Families

The April 18th copy of The Times newspaper carries an article about Paul Gilbert, author of Compassion.
The article focuses on Paul's pioneering therapeutic technique of Compassionate Mind Training (CMT), which teaches participants to develop strategies to treat themselves in a compassionate way.
CMT was developed by Paul Gilbert, a psychologist at the Mental Health Research Unit at Kingsway Hospital in Derby in the mid 1990s, not as a replacement for other psychological interventions but as a way of enhancing those treatments.

The Art and Science of Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy, like most other areas of health care, is a synthesis of scientific technique and artistic expression.
The practice, like any other, is grounded in a series of standardized principles, theories, and techniques.
Individual practitioners define themselves within the field by using these basic tools to achieve their therapeutic goals in novel ways, applying these rudimentary skills and guiding principles to each situation.
However, a toolbox full of treatment approaches, no matter how comprehensive, is not enough to effectively reach your patients. Effective work can only be accomplished through a synthesis of the fundamental scientific methods and the creative application of these techniques, approaches, and strategies.
The Art and Science of Psychotherapy offers invaluable insight into the creative side of psychotherapy. The book addresses the fundamental split between researchers and scholars who use scientific methods to develop disorder-specific treatment techniques and those more clinically inclined therapists who emphasize the individual, interpersonal aspects of the therapeutic process.
With contributions from leading therapists, the editors have compiled a practical handbook for clinical psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists, and mental health professionals.
A Guide to Coaching and Mental Health
The Recognition and Management of Psychological Issues
by Andrew Buckley and Carole Buckley
It is vital that coaches have the ability to recognise mental health problems in their clients, enabling them to make an informed decision about whether coaching is appropriate.
A Guide to Coaching and Mental Health provides an indispensable introduction to the assessment of psychological issues in the context of coaching.
Divided into three sections, the book covers all the legal, ethical and practical considerations. Section One, Working on the Boundary, starts by exploring the distinction between normal and abnormal behaviour.
In section Two, What's Being Said, the authors introduce fictional case studies, which cover a range of possible mental health issues from mild depression and anxiety, through to psychoses and potentially life threatening problems.
Section three, Categories of Mental Illness, guides the reader through the definition and management of the more common mental health problems.
This accessible and jargon-free guide to identifying mental illness will prove invaluable for coaches and other related professionals, whatever their level of experience.
